Argentina

Hello! It’s our last destination before we head back to NY NY - Argentina! We played a show last night in Buenos Aires, and tonight in Cordoba. Let me say that the Argentinians are possibly the best crowds we have ever had! These concerts were raves, going until 6 and 7 in the morning with DJs who keep the music up after we finish (it’s still going on now as I type), and the people were TIGHT! I mean, they were clearly not bothered about personal space, so if one person was moving, the 4 or so people around him would move all together, and when the music got really going it was like the crowd was a giant organism breathing up and down, flowing as one. so, I mean wow! It was really invigorating to receive their energy, POWERFUL. I am so happy to have had an experience like last night and tonight. Now it is 2:26 AM (1:26 Eastern Standard Time) and I am in the lobby of our lovely hotel (because there is no internet in the room) sending this last South American post before we head home tomorrow. It’ll be a long day of travel, ending with us back in NY on Monday morning around 6:55 AM. This has been an exciting leg for sure! And we are playing a radio concert in Aberdeen, Scotland on October 1st which will be our next stop before we rest for 2 or 3 weeks. Oh I love Scotland, too bad we’ll be there only for 2 days. So, keep checking the site in case anything exciting pops up. You never know!

Love you all!

Experiência do rolo da rocha

Wow! I have had a real rock and roll experience! I spent the night in a Brazilian hospital! I got the usual, food poisoning, and spent a good 12 hours throwing up before I fainted in the lobby just as we were leaving for the show. A little dramatic, I know. Mauro, our security guard valiantly picked me up and carried me to my room, where immediately, or so it seemed to me at least, there were three men dressed in green taking my blood pressure. They decided I was dehydrated (no doubt!) and sent me in an ambulance to the hospital (my first ambulance ride! - although unfortunately I was a little too out of it to notice the details). Now let me describe this hospital scenario. We were in Belo Horizante, a city somewhere in the middle of Brazil where every single person we had encountered upon disembarking from the plane was absolutely hot - drop dead, open your mouth, fall on your knees gorgeous! So, the hospital was no different. I was a little out of it, as you can imagine but as they pushed me in on a rickety wheelchair I peeked open one eye at a time and blurrily glimpsed gorgeous doctors and nurses bustling around a white open room. It was like the scene from a soap opera or ER! I landed in a bed separated from the rest of the room by light green curtains, and a young attractive doctor who spoke excellent English came in and took care of me. I was most happy to be there because I knew as soon as they got the IV going I’d feel like a new person. I did. It was wonderful!

A Brazilian woman who was working with production had accompanied me there to help with the language (note, Portuguese is very different from Spanish), and I learned about her exciting life as a model. Later on in the night (or morning) I was “rescued” by some fine knights in shining armor (i.e. a couple of crew guys) who came to take me away. I was never left alone, oh people are so nice! So, it was a fun experience. I did feel a little sad when I looked at my watch just after we got to the hospital and realized that the show was beginning without me! Ahh, I hated that! But I was informed that one of the girls from production stood behind the keyboards and mimed! Moby changed the set a little, and it was quite successful. Afterwards of course was the afterparty of the year. Moby had a 20 person hot tub IN his hotel room, and I have already mentioned that the most beautiful people in the world live in Belo Horizante, so of course I was also sad to miss that fun experience. BUT, I feel so much better and it was enlightening to see a beautiful hospital in Brazil, so I didn’t mind!

Now it’s thunderstorming in Argentina. Beautiful, night lightening and thunder. Buenos Aires is a very big city it seems, although I have only seen the 30-minute drive from the hotel to the venue. We have our second to last show tonight for this leg of the tour, last one’s tomorrow! It should be good. They are crazy about Moby here, I know I keep saying this. So, I am fine and well, with an interesting experience under my belt. Life is beautiful isn’t it!

Love you,
Luci

Rio

Here we are in Rio!

What a beachy place, if only the sun would show its face! Raining and raining and clouds and more rain. I might have to come back and see it again. Tomorrow we are going sightseeing. I should have some more interesting pictures!

The concerts we have been playing here are pretty HUGE, tonight’s was 10,000 and it wasn’t even the largest. It seems that for the locals a concert like Moby is the event of the year and everyone alive basically, goes to the show, with great enthusiasm. This makes for fantastic crowds and amazing energy! Check out this picture Moby took tonight during the show. See what I mean!

Love!

Sao Paulo!

Ok, this could perhaps be my very favorite hotel of all. I mean, yes, I remember I said that about Cancun, and maybe they are both in first place. But the design of this hotel is completely over the top!!! It is called Hotel Unique, and from the size of the washcloths to the backwards presentation of the room service menu, it IS! First its outer design is much like the shape of a slice of watermelon, or the belly of a ship. All the windows are round like portholes, and the outside is a deep teak looking wood. Ahh, I think of Davis (my brother). You walk through 40 foot metal doors into the lobby which itself is 2 or three stories high, painted deep reds and browns, with art carefully placed everywhere. There is a reading room just past the 2 personal-sized reservation desks, where there is some kind of brown pillowy thing you can flop on top of to do some browsing through any of the many giant coffee table books they have artistically placed on the book shelves. I cannot even describe the bar, tall. So upstairs. We are staying on the highest guest floor, but above us is the Sky Bar and restaurant. This is on the top of the building, and the skyline is so immense it makes New York look like a small neighborhood. Wow! The guest rooms are designed so fantastically that I want to make my next house look like them, with maybe a little more color (you know how they are into this white on white thing, but it seems very very crisp). Aside from the flatscreen TV, towel warmers, a fresh coconut opened with a straw, and a bed that will make you cry to get out of, this room has an automated curtain you control from the bed that makes it pitch black as night when you’re sleeping. Ohhhh, the perfection. I won’t go into too much detail about the Jacuzzi, or how you can lift up the window/wall separating the bedroom from the bathroom and watch the flatscreen from your perch in the bubbling tub. My favorite thing about this hotel I haven’t even described yet. Oh! The Poooooooool. Yes, I love a pool, but this one is out of some creative genius’s imaginative depths! Ok. It is downstairs 3 levels from the lobby, and since Sao Paulo is technically still in winter (although it is mild) I figured an indoor pool was a perfect idea. Well first of all, it was two pools.

One on the right was yellow, with a slide coming from the floor above going into it, Jacuzzi chair things that if you lay in them (under the water but your head would be resting comfortably above) and push a button on the wall beside them they’ll massage your whole body with raging water, ahh. Then to the left was a blue long pool for swimming. I went straight for that one. Since I slept 13 hours last night (due to a recording session that ended well after 5:30 AM the night before and an early flight the next day) I thought a little exercise would be a perfect way to start off the day! (it was 3:15PM when I got to the pool) Just after I started swimming I realized music had come on. Nice, and although at that moment I thought the man behind the bar had turned it on, it was later I realized the music was automated, somehow triggered by my movement in the pool. But what was so amazing about this music was that is sounded clearer underwater than it did out of water. Under Water Speakers!!! Ohhhh genius! I loved it, and honestly it was the first time in my life I have ever been able to swim to the beat of music! Usually you hear it above the water but as soon as you make a small splash you can’t hear the sound anymore. Oh, wow. So, as I swam I realized that I was not, in fact, indoors, underground like I assumed initially. Above me was the atmosphere, a straight shot to the sky! HOW, they found a little pathway between the buildings and levels of the hotel to make an open room I will never know! Finally I ran up the stairs to level two and took a ride on the waterslide! Ohhh, it was FLYING! I think they had greased it up or something, and it was so fast and so fun I must have gone up and down the stairs 4 or 5 times. And keep in mind I was the only person around aside from the many staff bringing me towels, offering me drinks, showing me to the lockers and the saunas, etc. OH! The paradise! I always love to find a place where designers have thought about how to let adults (not only children) have fun! It was perfect! I finished the morning - no, afternoon, with a visit to the sauna, where when I entered the hot room music automatically began. I had another slide into the pool after that, and a final sauna visit. Could I get used to this?!?!?!?!?

Love!!

Santiago Afterparty

The after party in Santiago! Just got this picture emailed to me.

Left to right:
Me, obviously, Niko a new friend, Joy, and Christopher who’s working with director George (not pictured) on a documentary about Moby. Fun.

Chile

South America...

So there are some strange things about South America so far. Almost everywhere we go there are people standing on the highways, streets, interstates, lanes, during the most heavy traffic jams you can imagine, wandering in and out of lanes of cars, selling everything from bunches of bananas and cotton candy to national flags and animal skins. Whoa, dangerous (for them, no?) and weird! Wow.

We are in Santiago Chile now. Quite a beautiful city - clean and modern.

The hotel is one of those giant downtown kinds of hotels with the glass elevators that shoot up hundreds of feet in seconds and you can watch the people in the lobby getting smaller and smaller as you go up, or feel like you’re on the free fall at Six Flags as you go down. Ahh! We ate a nice Japanese meal when we arrived in Santiago for Moby’s birthday (9-11). Yes, he is another year older – a decade even. I’ll let y’all research his age if you don’t already know. Spring chicken!

The show in Santiago was outrageous! I think it was our largest one yet, people PACKED into this giant warehouse, wall to wall. We had an incredible after party for Moby’s birthday after the show in a beautiful bar with nice food and drinks, ahh.

It got pretty wild; well it must have because by the time we all looked at our watches we realized it was well after 5:30 AM, so we headed to Moby’s giant presidential suite for more. I think I went to bed at 8:30. It’s occasionally good to have fun like that once in a while! And all in the name of a happy birthday.

We spent the next day recovering - didn’t wake up until 3:30 PM. We made a little trip to the mall and met for Thai food that evening. Today we are recording, mainly playing around in a cool Chilean recording studio. It is winter here -spring starts on September 21st, so it’s quite cold and I find myself buying scarves and hats. But awesome. To Sao Paulo tomorrow. This stuff is amazing!

Columbia!

Wow, what a beautiful place on this Earth!

Bogota was enchanting! I couldn’t believe it was so beautiful and the people we met there were so nice! Saturday we went up to the mountains just outside of Bogota for a lunch with some friends of friends of Moby. They were all the very nicest people imaginable! We journeyed to a real farm with horses, chickens, and dogs, one who had just had puppies! It was breathtakingly beautiful, as you can easily see by the pictures. The brother of the guy who invited us up there rides horses professionally in bull fights, and we got to watch him practice. It was hysterical to watch a guy run around in circles wheeling bull-horns on a metal cart, chasing the guy on the horse. Amazing! Moby made an interesting point, that what if aliens were watching that, what would they THINK was going on! Funny! Beautiful.

Venezuela

So, Venezuela was very interesting! My first time ever in South America! Ok, it was beautiful, but really impoverished in most places (outside of the center of the city of Caracas). Our hotel was completely gated with a 24 hour guard because it was absolutely unsafe to go outside of it. Basically they told us we would get kidnapped. And no just because we were tourists, but because we’re people. They’ll kidnap anyone, so it is just as unsafe for Venezuelans as it is for tourists. Sad! I would be sad to live in a place like that. But don’t worry, we had 3 giant bodyguards with us the whole time! We had a nice day trip on Thursday to eat lunch and do a little shopping. The show in Caracas was AMAZING, because the fans are so much FUN! And our lighting designer, Dan Hardiman, had some really cool lights to work with only intensifying and enhancing my personal performance experience! We were eating the catered food after the show and the girl who served us leaned down over our table to tell us how much each one of the caterers (there were like 15) had put all their soul into making this experience for us in Caracas absolutely unforgettable, and one of the best places we will remember. I absolutely LOVE exchanges with people who love doing their jobs! It was a beautiful night. Ok, Colombia update next!

Afterparty

So the afterparty with Cirque du Soleil was absolutely awesome! They closed a secret bar for us, it was like a house called Casa Amarillia (Yellow House), and we wandered through the rooms sipping drinks and learning about each others’ respective artist lives. Since the Cirque company is about 150 people and we are 15 (including Moby’s personal assistant and bodyguard) we had a lot more people to meet! It was too much fun and so interesting to learn about their lives. This picture is of me and the two trapeze artists, perhaps the highlight of the entire show.

They are twins from Kiev and were gymnasts and joined Cirque when they were 14. Now they’re 18. Wow! Sooo cute and friendly. Now we are in Mexico city and will possibly be hanging out with the band Interpol tonight after the show since they are also playing here, the largest city in the world!

OK, that’s all for now, love and good food,
Luci

The Cancun Show

Ok let me say we had an INTERESTING show in Cancun. For some reason the floor was on a springboard, and this venue couldn’t have lights hung from the ceiling, so they had to rig them up from big trusses that were supported from the floor. You can see where this is going. When we first walked out on the stage I thought Mexico was having an earthquake, you know with all this natural disaster happening lately. I was slightly bouncing, and looking up at the lights I saw that they were too. I wondered if perhaps that was enough earth movement to make the building fall down. Halfway through the show the crew had taken down 2/3rds of the lights fearing they would fall. By the time we hit Body Rock near the end of the show, the rest of the lights were MOVING! When we did our encore of Rebel Yell, something about the frequency of the tempo and the movement of the crowd caused everything to shake even more! Those lights suspended right above us were bowing back and forth so intensely that I could see their wave patterns! They caused such a vibration that when I stood very still on the riser I actually caught air a few times from the great magnitude of the bouncing. Ali came on stage pale-faced to tell Moby that he had to stop the show. Then a Mexican made an announcement to the audience, I think he asked them to be more still. We ended with Lift Me Up and minimal bouncing. After the show the lighting guys had calculated that the lights were bending 18 inches back and forth AHH!

We got to Monterrey yesterday afternoon. Lovely, mountainous.

I was starting to get a cough, so I went to the drug store in the mall - perhaps one of the biggest malls I have ever seen. As I was walking back to the hotel to change for an 8:00 dinner with Moby, a van stopped beside me and the door opened and I heard, “Luci! Get in!!” It was Moby and everyone! They had changed the plans, and were going to dinner earlier because Cirque du Soleil had invited us to come to the show, VIP! AHHHHHHH! I didn’t even find this out until we were sitting at the dinner table. Saltimbanco (one of the shows I actually haven’t seen) was in town and we were going! Ohh, I couldn’t explain my excitement! If you know me you know my true and utter passion for the brilliant combination of the art of music, color, movement, the human body, and human feats that Cirque du Soleil encompasses. Ahhh. When we got to the show the Cirque promoter asked us if we’d rather go to the VIP tent during the intermission or go backstage in the kitchen with the artists. HA?! We chose the latter! It was amazing! The show was spectacular, during intermission I met some of the musicians, and managers. Afterwards I met a few more of them when we went to their backstage area where instead of hummus and coat hangers they had trapezes and weight-lifting machines. Amazing! They are all coming to the show tonight, how perfect! So wish us luck - I mean this is actually one of my all time dreams coming true. I got to go backstage and meet the Cirque du Soleil artists! Ahhhhhh, life is soooooooo good!

Love y’all!

Here We Go Again!

Ok, we’re in Cancun. This is a place that deserves some detailed description. The trip yesterday was more than miserable since we had to skip lunch because American Airlines only serves a snack (even on our international flight), the wind and clouds made for a borderline “gurge” landing, and we were detained 3 hours in the Mexican immigration office because some ego-laden man decided we needed another paper that, according to our professionals, is never necessary in Mexico. The fact is that I think the entire staff of the airport immigration office wanted pictures, drawings, and autographs from Moby, and while Moby was appeasing, Egoman realized he wanted something to do with his afternoon and came up with anything he could think of to entertain himself.

After a short van ride we arrived at Le Blanc Resort and Spa. Walking into the pristine white marble lobby we were all blinded by the illuminated turquoise water lapping just outside the pool at the end of the hallway. After being banded by a lovely Mexican woman, she put a plastic bracelet on our wrists explaining that anything we wanted, drink, food, alcoholic beverages, minibar, room service, was already included, we staggered into the elevators with our mouths open and our eyebrows raised. A jovial Mexican man greeted us, telling us his name was Jay Leno, and he happened to be standing by a cart of dessert creations, I assumed on its way to one of the restaurants, and insisted that I taste a plate. It was caramelized sugar making a tower with a yellow rose made out of sugar and two chocolate covered grapes resting on little cups of moose. The room was a soft white whiteness, the bathroom and closet first, then the bed, then a step down to the two-person Jacuzzi and the sliding glass doors that open out to the balcony. The view was of a lake sized swimming pool, tiki bars, another pool on a level above the lake, another pool on a level below the lake, lounge chairs, and THE BEACH! The entire Gulf of Mexico is lapping at my window right now. Just remembering this view will surely sooth me for years to come!

Naturally I could barely stay in the room long enough to fully put on my bathing suit. I went straight to the Gulf grabbing one of the crew guys in the hall on my way and swam! Oh the temperature, oh the cleansing salty water, oh the ice cream sand! I love the gulf! Then to the lake-pool. Here’s a breathtaking moment! When you’re looking at the pool from outside of it, it looks delicious, you know. But once you actually get in the water the pool is constructed in such a way that it looks like the water of the pool leads straight into the gulf. There are no edges to the pools so water is actually the edge, and standing in the water if you look out to the sea it looks like the edge of the pool is the edge of a the world, and then the sea. Ohhhhhh. Just after I jumped in and was pondering the lovely design of the pool, I realized that this was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. The water in the pool, the water in the gulf, the beautiful blue sky, large and spaced fluffy white clouds, and there was a rainbow above us! It was such a bright rainbow that it honestly looked like someone had painted the scene. I couldn’t believe it! A few more of the guys came to the pool by that point and swam beneath the rainbow with me. Ohh it was perfect, ohh it was delicious, ohhh life!

First show is tonight! Wish us luck!

Love!
Luci
